About the event
During the first half of the nineteenth century, builders went from constructing one bridge at a time to erecting hundreds of thousands. Historian and curator Gregory Dreicer explores this transformation in a discussion of his new book, American Bridge: Reinventing Building, Making History. This investigation of an invention that enabled the construction of the modern nation-state challenges the evolutionary metaphors and nationalist beliefs that still shape how most of us view technology.
