About the event
This talk explores how two places share an architectural and moral lineage. During California’s Arts and Crafts period, Berkeley was home to the house and neighborhood planning ideas of architect Bernard Maybeck and the Hillside Club. From Maybeck’s generation came a brown-shingle culture in which three spheres — house, garden, and neighborhood — came together with an inspiration drawn from a fourth: nature. Berkeley families brought this culture to Inverness, a coastal village on Tomales Bay. There, they put Maybeck and Hillside Club ideals to work in the design of summer cottages, in the plan for the village, and in the defense of the village’s surrounding natural spaces.
The Hillside Club Fireside meetings are held on the first Monday of most months (January, February, March, April, May, June, September, October, and November).
They are open to the public and admission is free to members, with a suggested donation for non-members.…
