Hillside Club Use Conditions
To help preserve this historic building, the following requirements must be observed by all Renters:
No Smoking - Absolutely NO SMOKING in any part of the building.
Alcohol - HARD LIQUOR IS NOT ALLOWED ON THE PREMISES. Wine, champagne, and beer are permissible for private events. If alcohol is served at an event open to the public, a one-day alcohol permit from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board of the State of California ($25 from www.abc.ca.gov) must be displayed.
Noise - This is a residential neighborhood, and the Berkeley Noise Ordinance requires QUIET AFTER 10:30 PM. No loud and/or amplified music is allowed after 9:45 PM. Noise outside the building must be kept within reasonable limits. DJs must abide by sound levels set by the management if the music is excessively loud. PLEASE ENSURE THAT GUESTS DO NOT CONGREGATE OUTSIDE THE PREMISES AFTER AN EVENT.
Setup/Cleaning - The club will handle set-up and breakdown for all Club furniture used during a rental. When using a full-service caterer, the catering staff perform all cleanup of the kitchen. When self-catering, the renter is responsible for doing cleanup of the kitchen. At the end of the event, clients are responsible for gathering linens and any rented material for collection by their party rental company, removing any personal belongings including decorations, flowers, programs, and party swag. Any material left in the Club after the rental is complete will be presumed to be disposable and will be recycled or hauled out as trash.
Trash/Recycling - The Renter agrees to follow all printed signs and verbal instructions from staff regarding the management of trash and recycling during their event. Staff will be responsible for the final cleaning of the club.
Minors - Children (minors) under the age of 18 must be under supervision of an appointed adult supervisor at all times. Climbing on the building, running, jumping, throwing food or taking food or drink into the restrooms are not permitted. Minors are not permitted in the kitchen or backstage without direct adult supervision.
Decorations
Candles - No candles or open flame of any type.
Glitter etc. - At no point during your party should glitter, confetti, silly string, or rice be thrown or spread around. Excess time spent by staff cleaning these materials from our facility will result in the loss of your security deposit.
Taping/Hanging - Nothing can be hung from the chandeliers, other light fixtures, or fire sprinkler piping. Our fixtures are original and very fragile. You may not use any fastening device that penetrates the wall surface. This applies both indoors and outdoors. You may use low-tack masking tape (like blue painters’ tape), fishing line, or florist's wire with permission only. Inside the clubhouse there are designated nails and hooks for decorations. You may not attach or fasten anything to the trees, shrubs, or plant material in the garden.
Balloons - No Helium filled balloons permitted due to fire hazard.
Other decoration restrictions - Any decorative materials, including fabric, must be certified as fire retardant, except for table linens.
Kitchen - A kitchen is available for warming and staging only. Since the kitchen is not a commercial kitchen, it cannot be used for cooking. Caterers are responsible for detailed cleaning of the kitchen by the end of your event.
Ending Time - Rental time can vary depending on your group’s needs; however, all events, including clean up, must end by 10:00 pm. This is a residential neighborhood. No loud and/or amplified music is allowed after 9:45 PM. Overtime fee will be as stated in your contract (in half hour increments).
Parking - Parking for The Hillside Club is available on neighborhood streets. There are no time restrictions on weekends. Monday–Friday has a 2-hour maximum parking limit during the day from 8 am to 7 pm without a “G” Berkeley City parking sticker.
Loss - The Renter agrees that The Hillside Club shall not be responsible for any loss of or damage to property belonging to the Renter, Renter’s guests, employees or contractors (including caterer) or for any injuries to the same while on Hillside Club property.
Insurance - A Certificate of Liability Insurance in the amount of $1 million per occurrence, naming the Hillside Club as additional insured, is required prior to most events. This is usually affordable and protects the renter from any claims arising out of use of the clubhouse and facilities, since the club’s insurance does not cover events by others.
You, as the Renter, shall take full responsibility for the welfare of your guests, the overall behavior of your guests, and their compliance with all The Hillside Club rules as outlined above. You, as the Renter, shall also ensure that all regulations regarding No Smoking Regulations as specified by California law and all City of Berkeley ordinances are not violated.
The Renter agrees that the use of the Clubhouse and facilities shall be in full compliance with the conditions set forth in the Hillside Club Conditions of Use.

VIOLATION OF ANY OF THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS FORFEITS RENTER’S DAMAGE AND SECURITY DEPOSIT, AND ALLOWS THE MANAGER, AT ANYTIME, TO CLOSE THE CLUBHOUSE TO FURTHER USE BY THE RENTER.
