At 7:30 pm on December 8, we’ll have a talk and slides by longtime and well-known Berkeley potter Mary Law, about her work as a ceramic artist and teacher. Mary received an MFA inceramics from Alfred University, and she hastaught there as well as at the California College of Arts and Crafts and San Jose State University.She has shown her work internationally. Mary specializes in functional and decorative pots —vessels for food, containers for flowers. You cansee samples on her website at www.marylawpottery.com and she’ll bring pieces to display. Admission is $5 for Club members, $8 for the general public.

Tony Bove, author of “Just Say No to Microsoft!” will be speaking Sunday evening at the Berkeley CyberSalon at the Hilllside Club, 2286 Cedar St., Berkeley.

The Cybersalon is a monthly panel discussion, open to the public, about the impact of technology of various aspects of society, such as privacy, public policy, education, and the distribution and creation of music. The topic will be “Life without Microsoft.”

Admission is $5 for Hillside Club members and $10 for non-members, which gives you the chance to partake of ideas, wine and cheese.

By the way, we tried to find a pro-Microsoft speaker to make this an equal opportunity platform, but no one volunteered. If anyone would like to challenge Bove formally, contact whoisylvia “at” aol.com.

Scott Hill was recently selected by the late Steve Lacy to participate as an associate artist in the May 2004 residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida. Scott recently returned to France in support of his latest CD release “Narrow Streets” - recorded in Paris, March 2002. In August 2003, he was commissioned to score a play by once banned Iranian author Sharnush Parsipour. Scott completed his debut independent release Steps in 2000 recorded in the Bay Area and includes drummer Scott Amendola, bassist John Shifflett, and a special guest appearance from Rob Burger . Scott has also appeared with Persian folk musician Aldoush Alpanian on his highly acclaimed debut release “The Child Within” (XDOT25) in 1992 and recorded with the electric fusion power trio Three Bean Salad on their release in 1994, “Legumity” (XDOT25). Scott studied jazz improvisation and theory under Stan Kenton alumnus and Fulbright scholar Ray Brown (trumpeter and arranger). Scott holds a bachelors degree in Music from the University of California at Santa Cruz and currently resides in Oakland, California.

ABOUT VOICES
Founded in 1988, Voices strives as an organization to reflect the diversity within the lesbian community and is dedicated to social change that overcomes oppression in all its forms. Voices is a member of the Sister Singers Network, and of GALA, the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses.

Voices’ first CD, Everything Possible, was released in the spring of 2002 and will be available for sale at the event. It is also available for order online at www.lesbian.org/voices, and at Boadecia’s Books in Kensington.

The Stone-Zimmermann Duo has been captivating audiences with their blend of superb musicianship, ravishing sound and profound interpretations. Both musicians are originally from Europe and share a common musical approach. Their strong individual musical personalities have created performances that have been described as, “capturing the essence of each composer and communicating it with enormous technical and emotional skill.”

Sharing their passion for classical and contemporary masterpieces, the Duo programs in an innovative manner that enthralls audiences of all ages. They compliment their performances with introductions that include enlightening background information on the works being performed. The Stone-Zimmermann Duo also enjoys collaborating with a select group of exciting artists to perform music written for larger ensembles such as trios, quartets and quintets.

An artist of broad musical interests, German violinist Iris Stone resides in San Francisco where she is a member of the New Century Chamber Orchestra. She recently performed and recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle. The concert was telecast live on German national television and recorded on the EMI label.

As a member of the Munich Chamber Orchestra, a world-class touring ensemble, Iris performed in the great concert halls of Europe, Asia, and America on prestigious series such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York and San Francisco Performances. She has also been a member of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, has been Assistant Concertmaster of San Francisco’s Women’s Philharmonic and Principle of the Monterey Symphony Orchestra.

Iris first came to the United States in 1993 as a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright scholarship. Subsequently she worked with violinist Donald Weilerstein, founding member of the Cleveland Quartet, and was granted a long-term residency at the Banff Center for the Arts in Canada.

Iris grew up in West Berlin during the years of the Berlin wall. During her childhood Iris was a member of the German National Youth Orchestra and was exposed to incredible concerts of all types including the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert Von Karajan. Her parents, who are avid choral singers, are members of the Singakademie zu Berlin founded by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Iris grew up attending many of their rehearsals instilling in her a special sensitivity to vocal music.

Swiss Pianist Eva-Maria Zimmermann maintains a career on two continents through performances that are “breathtakingly intense” (Der Bund, Switzerland) and “brilliant and sensitive” (Berner Oberländer). Her solo appearances include recitals as well as concerto performances with major symphony orchestras such as the Orchestra de la Suisse Romande.

Winner of the prestigious Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship, Eva-Maria has appeared at international festivals in Israel, the US and Europe including the “Festival Piano en Saintonge” in France, the “Sommerfestspiele Murten” in Switzerland and the “Yerba Buena International Music Festival” in San Francisco. Eva-Maria has studied with many distinguished musicians such as Leon Fleisher, György Sebök Leonard Hokanson and Dominique Merlet. She graduated with highest honors from the Conservatory of Geneva.

Eva-Maria is a musician of broad interests and in addition to her solo appearances devotes herself to chamber music, lieder recitals, and teaching. She actively collaborates with the Del Sol String Quartet and Bass-Baritone René Perler and was founding member of the award winning Charmillion Piano Quartet. As an educator, Eva-Maria has been a faculty member of the University of San Francisco and currently teaches in the music program at the Nueva School in Hillsborough, CA, which was founded by Sir Yehudi Menuhin.

Eva-Maria spent her early childhood in Indonesia, where her parents were Peace Corps workers. Being exposed to different cultures and languages from very early on has greatly enhanced her understanding of diverse styles of music and art. Eva-Maria currently lives in San Francisco where she pursues her career while raising a family.
